Jean Scores for Bellevue HS
at the
2A-3A Regionals
At the KingCo
League Championships at Mt. Si High School, Jean had a
disappointing night with her beam routine. But she was
fighting a cold and that surely threw off her balance.
But her team placed 2nd and that guaranteed that she'd
get at least one more chance to compete.
Just before the SeaKing (Regional)
Championships at Sammamish High, the Bellevue girls learned that one of their top three
girls (Jacqueline
Hamilton) was injured and was under doctor's
orders not to compete. Because of this, the BHS
girls would miss going as a team to State. Even
so, they were close, falling to 3rd place, with the top
two teams moving on to State.
Jean's beam routine, with one
bobble, was scored 6.70 and 7.00 to average 6.85 and was
high enough to count in the scoring. The lowest of
the six scores is thrown out.
I got my baptism in indoor sports
photography this quarter. The trick really is to
bump the ISO up to 1600 or higher. With wrestling
I can use a flash and never have to set the ISO above
500. I'll know better next year.

Nathanael Advances to GNAC Conference Race
Nathanael only raced in four official races during the
2009-10 indoor track season. At the Portland
Indoor at the University of Portland on February 7th, he
ran about 4:35 in the mile, just ahead of teammate
Andrew Van Ness, but not good enough to qualify for a
trip to the GNAC Conference Championships.
So the next week, at the UW Indoor Open on the 13th,
Nathanael moved down in distance to the shorter (and
faster) 800m. His personal best, set in high
school, was 2:01.01, and the GNAC provisional qualifying
time was set at 2:01.86. This would at least get
him on the list of possible runners at conference.
Nate ran a
typical race for him. The first 400m was slow
(60.5 seconds) and he was running toward the back of the
twelve man pack. He'd have to really pick it up in
the second 400m. So, as usual, he surged on the
straightaway just before the last lap and passed much of
the field. he finished in 3rd place in his heat
with a new personal best of 2:00.27. The GNAC
adjusted his time (due to track length) to 2:00.37.
Back home when we first checked
online, it looked like he'd landed in 10th place in the
conference and had earned the coveted trip to Nampa,
Idaho for the GNAC Conference Championships, where he'd
taken 9th in the mile as a freshman. But through
the evening, more results were posted from other meets
held on that weekend and by President's Day, twenty
runners had posted automatic (1:57.86) or provisional
(2:01.86) qualifying marks. Thankfully, his
2:00.37 was just fast enough to secure his place as the
15th of 16 entries. That's why it's called a
"provisional" mark.
Andrew Van Ness only managed a 4:33
in the mile and would not join Nate at conference.
But Kyle Fremd, now a freshman at Central Washington,
was the 15th of 15 to qualify in the 400m with a 51.70,
just under the 51.74 provisional qualifying mark.
Other members of Nate's Cross
Country team will join him including Chad Meis in the
mile and 800m, Nate Seeley in the 800m, and Jacob
"Wally" Wahlenmaier and AJ Baker
(16th of 16) in the mile with a 4:26.99. Nathanael
would not have qualified in the mile this year, even if
he'd run his lifetime best and broken 4:30. The
competition was stronger this year.
And "Madman Sleight" Saves the Best for
Last . . .
At the GNAC Championships in
Nampa, Idaho on Saturday, February 20th, Nathanael ran
yet another "race of his life." Family friends
Bruce and Liane Fremd took still photos and the video of
his 800m race. He was in Heat 1 (the slower heat)
and had the second slowest "seed" time, so he started
second from the outside in the outer "waterfall."
There were eight runners in his heat and nine in the
faster one. (See results below.) After hearing of the
result, Coach Larry Royce from
BCS remarked that "Madman Sleight" still had his kick!
In the four lap indoor 800m race, he
ran toward the back of the pack and was dead last toward
the end of lap two. But on the first straightaway on lap
three he passed from 8th to 3rd. Then he spotted
an opening that allowed him to pass to the front on the
left in lane one. He held the lead through the
final lap until he was caught at the line by
Anthony "Tony" Tomsich,
a senior from
Western Washington who had won the mile earlier in the
day.
Nathanael's 1:58.14 time was a
personal best by more than two seconds and earned him
7th place out of the 17 runners, and 2 points for SPU.
His teammates, freshman Nate Seeley took 1st, and senior Chad Meis took
5th.
After that race, he was trying to
decide whether to eat or shower, when a coach told him
he was needed to anchor the 4x400m relay. He hadn't
raced in the 4x400m this season but ran a fast final
leg. The team took 5th with a 3:30.56 and earned
another four points for SPU.

Laurie and Tom get Deepest Snow on Record
The February snow storms that shut down
Washington D.C. for a week this month set records for snow depth
all over the east.
I finally found their house on Mapquest. It's south-east
of D.C., in Owings, Maryland. Their driveway (left) is 200
feet long! |
Dad
Hospitalized
His ailments ganged up
on him this month. Upon visiting a lung specialist, dad
was admitted to Swedish Hospital. Problems with heart,
lungs, legs, bladder, and trachea seemed to vie for the title
"most serious ailment."
The retention of fluids in the feet and legs
appears to be caused by congestive heart failure.
Don, Randy, and I all made multiple
visits to Swedish.

The Land of Counterpane
by Robert Louis Stevenson
(1850-1894)
When I was
sick and lay a-bed,
I had two pillows at my head,
And all my toys beside me lay,
To keep me happy all the day.
And sometimes for an hour or so
I watched my leaden soldiers go,
With different uniforms and drills,
Among the bed-clothes, through the hills;
And sometimes sent my ships in fleets
All up and down among the sheets;
Or brought my trees and houses out,
And planted cities all about.
I was the giant great and still
That sits upon the pillow-hill,
And sees before him, dale and plain,
The pleasant land of counterpane.
|
|
After nearly two weeks at Swedish, Dad was transferred
to Park West in West Seattle. He does not want to
be there. I visited him on Friday, the 26th. He
could not talk above a whisper, could not hear well, was
not interested in his food, and seemed only interested
in watching the Friday night stock market TV show on
PBS. He did enjoy watching Nate's last race on my
laptop.
Laurie flew here on Wednesday, the 24th. Don took
Grandma Jean to Renton for the duration of her two week
visit. On Saturday she met with Randy and Dad and
Dr. Hom. She learned about his many ailments. The
congestive heart failure, on both sides of his heart, is
just the tip of the iceberg. A severe case of Bronchiectasis seems to be the most dangerous ailment.
The possibility of lung infection is very high. Then
there is his bladder. It will not empty out and he is
constantly tethered by a catheter to a bag.
His near constant coughing alarms the nursing home staff.
While he still dreams of "living to 105," he's also
mentioned that he'd be surprised to make it 15 more
days. Randy mentioned "two to three months, and his children
have emailed one another about wills, executors, and
those related issues. Randy is taking a two month
FLMA (Family and Medical Leave Act) leave.
When I saw him at Swedish Hospital, dad recited these two
favorite poems he had memorized when he was a boy and
had suffered more than his share of sick days abed. |
Little Boy Blue
by
Eugene Field (1850-1895)
The
little toy dog is covered with dust,
But sturdy and stanch he stands;
And the little toy soldier is red with rust,
And his musket moulds in his hands.
Time was when the little toy dog was new,
And the soldier was passing fair;
And that was the time when our Little Boy Blue
Kissed them and put them there.
"Now, don't you go till I come," he said,
"And don't you make any noise!"
So, toddling off to his trundle-bed,
He dreamt of the pretty toys;
And, as he was dreaming, an angel song
Awakened our Little Boy Blue---
Oh! the years are many, the years are long,
But the little toy friends are true!
Ay, faithful to Little Boy Blue they stand,
Each in the same old place---
Awaiting the touch of a little hand,
The smile of a little face;
And they wonder, as waiting the long years through
In the dust of that little chair,
What has become of our Little Boy Blue,
Since he kissed them and put them there.

Another brother from my Bible study goes home
Sid had not attended our group for a few
years but he will be remembered as a valiant fighter in the
"culture wars" -- always ready with a letter to the editor to
defend the Church against the State. He was a champion for
how things used to be in public education.
Sidney G. HAYMAN, Sr. On Feb 2 Sidney G.
Hayman, Sr., 94, departed this life to his eternal home,
surrounded by his family. He was born in Prince George, British
Columbia. At age 3, his family immigrated to the US. Sid lived
in West Seattle, then the Eastside. After graduating from West
Seattle High School, he entered the Navy, where he served during
WWII. Before and after service with the Navy, he worked in
Public Relations at Alaska Steamship Co. until 1969. He later
worked in public relations at Bellevue Christian School. Sid
worked with the Light and Life Hour radio broadcast, and
throughout his life, frequently wrote letters to the editor. He
enjoyed singing, loved cloud formations, the mountains, salt
water, exploring creation. Until age 88 he kayaked Puget Sound
and participated in Cross Sound races with his eldest son. Sid
leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Dorothee (Haakensen) Hayman
and his five children: Brian (Esther) Hayman, Andrea (Don)
Glassett, Sidney (Jenny) Hayman, Barbara (Paul) Eirikson, Anita
(David) Cowles. He has eight grandchildren, two great grandsons
and a niece, Eleanor Gosline. He was preceded in death by his
parents and his brother, Bob. A memorial service will be heldat
1:30 pm on Saturday, February 6th at Bellevue Christian Reformed
Church, 1211-148th Ave NE, Bellevue, WA. Memorial contributions
may be made to Bellevue Christian School.

Jeannie
Beth is a Singer!
Jean had her first vocal recital on February 4th. Here she is with her
voice teacher Katie Collins She sang "If Music be
the Food of Love" by Purcell and "If I Loved You" from the
Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel. Only one
other student may have topped Jean's ability. And maybe I
am biased because Olivia Besel, a singer in Kantorei, sang "On
My Own" from Les Misérables.
Annie came home for this Thursday night
performance. What a surprise to learn that Annie and Katie
were floor mates in Hill Hall at SPU. Nancy and I and
Ginger and Susan also attended the recital.
I'm looking forward to her spring recital
when she expects to sing "Waiting for My Dearie" from
Brigadoon.

The 3rd Annual Pemberley Ball, Another Fun Night of
English Country Dancing
|
Nate was missed, but while he was
away in Idaho, we attended the Pemberley Ball.
The students who have been the
leaders of The Pemberley Society at SPU are now seniors
and future dances are in doubt.
Tom Disher's dad and mom (Bob and
Kim) were in town and joined in the dance.
With my business school Amazon.com
birthday gift certificate, I bought myself a black silk
ascot to wear at future dances. I was tired of
wearing a strip of black vinyl upholstery. But
nobody seemed to notice that odd piece of my kit.
I really liked some new dances in
groups of six and in the round. The one where the
men waltzed briefly with every fourth lady that swung by
was especially fun.
Grandma Jean got in for the student
price and Tom wheeled her around afterwards while Annie
danced in a dress borrowed from roommate Sandra. She
also enjoyed the fruit and tarts.
As usual, I took pictures and posted
a
web page of the
event.
Attendance was down from 2009 but
the caller was hilarious, and we were delighted to support
the core group of students who are Annie's particular
friends.

Bits and Pieces
My
55th birthday was modest event. Susan got me the audio version of
C.S. Lewis' The Screwtape Letters. Nancy had Ginger buy
me a steak.
Oral surgery
was required to get at the root of "tooth #11". Dr. David
To could not drill out the post of a old failed root canal so he
sent me to an Endodontist who cut through my gum to get at the
root needing attention. I return to Dr. To in March for
the new crown.
I'm
scheduled to take off March 1st to 5th, and we hope to
spend the entire week cleaning the house.
In mid-February, at the start of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver (which
we watched each evening), I commented to my Bible study about what God
might allow to call attention away from the sports spectacle (as He had
done during the Oakland/San Francisco World Series in 1989 -- a 7.1
magnitude quake.)
On Tuesday, January 12th a 7.0 magnitude earthquake had
devastated Haiti. But I was up late Friday night and read
the initial report of the 8.8 magnitude quake that struck south
of Santiago, Chile. (Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 03:34:14 AM
at epicenter). The aftershocks just keep coming.

My Quote from January
I did
my best, it wasn't much
I
couldn't feel, so I tried to
touch
I've
told the truth, I didn't
come to fool ya
And
even though It all went
wrong
I'll
stand before the Lord of
Song
With
nothing on my tongue but
Hallelujah

Cohen
