The February
Mom Report
On the 26th,
mom joined the family and Don and Randy at Nathanael's
end-of-season wrestling banquet. She enjoyed her evening
out but remained tired.
But life
for Jean may have changed for her on the 28th. At
4:30AM Nancy and I got up and prepared to drive Jean to
Swedish/Cherry Hill (where she'd first been taken back
in early November.) But this time she was going in
to have a pacemaker installed.
A medical
exam and the wearing of a heart monitor for 24 hours
earlier in the month had convinced Dr. John Petersen
(dad's heart doctor) that Jean really was due for a
steady jolt. Her doctor, Dr. Dennis Hom, ("Dennis
the Menace" as she fondly calls him) approved. Her
heart rate was regularly in the 30-36 beats-per-minute
range. Just after the surgery Dr. Petersen told us it
had even dropped into the 20s. He seemed
especially happy with the potential for mom's increased
energy and a better life. Her rate is now 60 bpm,
bringing her oxygen level up to 100%.
Her
surgery was 8:30AM to 10:30AM on the 28th and I stayed
with her in her room until 6:30PM. That's when
Nancy brought the kids by with flowers and took me off
with them to see As You Like It at Taproot
Theatre. |
At 6:30AM
the next morning we got a call at home from Dr. Petersen
telling us that mom could go home and Nancy picked her
up. Randy had gotten there first and had discovered that
nobody had fed her any of her breakfast. One would
think the hospital could do better than the nursing
home.
◄
Before surgery mom is subdued but cooperative
and calm.
Home
the next day.
►
Mom
will wear a sling for a week. We further
restrict her with a sweater that only frees her
right arm. Here she tries to enjoy the
cheese omelet I cooked for her dinner. She is
very opinionated about my cooking. Now her
biggest problem is the itch until the tape comes
off. She got spoiled by bed pans at the
hospital. "No mom, you have to stand up to get a
ride to the bathroom." |

Nathanael Ends a Stellar Wrestling Career
The road to his third
appearance at the State wrestling championships at the Tacoma
Dome was a tough one -- much tougher than Nate's trips in 2005
and 2006.
At the seven-school Tri-District
Championships on February 1-2 at BCS, he placed 4th in his 145
lb. weight class, with the top 5 wrestlers advancing to
Regionals. Orting, Vashon and Cascade Christian (all from
District 3) were very tough.
The BCS team
qualified nine of its members to wrestle at Regionals at Castle
Rock on February 8-9. On Friday night, due to his seeding,
he
faced a #1 seed from Tenino. But Nathanael rose to the occasion
and pinned him with some flare. In his second match that night he faced
the #2 wrestler from host Castle Rock. Nathanael made it look
easy as he pinned this opponent as well. These two wins
guaranteed him a trip to State! The worst he could place on
Saturday was 6th and the top 6 of 16 qualified to advance.
But that is just what
happened. Nathanael proceeded to loose three matches on
Saturday to drop to 6th. His match against Devin
Ossman of Cascade Christian will always remain a controversial
memory for me. I clearly saw Nate deserve back points he
was not awarded. But the referee said he had not changed
his hold and that he was not due the extra three points. A
penalty for grabbing the uniform was also not called (and I have
the picture). He got credit for
this near fall but not for
this one. But in his typical good humor, Nate
was not upset. That was left to his dad. It would
have only gained him one place in any case. And he had met
the two goals I had hoped for. He broke his own record of
20 pins in a season and he qualified for his 8th trip to State!
Nathanael
was joined at State by three senior teammates, Jude Fouquier
(135), Kevin Yoo (160) and Chris Bowser (285). He had the
worst seed at State such that his first match had him face Sam Villegas
of Royal. Sam not only defeated Nathanael 17-1, but he
went on to capture the WIAA 1A championship at 145 lbs.
Nathanael's
first match in the losers bracket was a real masterpiece however,
and he finally got a win at State in his third trip. He faced Dylan Ellison
of Newport and Nate pinned him in
3:27. (See photo above.) His win by a pin plus
his two pins at Regionals brought his season total up to a
team-best 22 for the season.
Nathanael's
final match of his career will be remembered by all who saw it
as a true class act. He faced the eventual 5th place
finisher Kyle Buck of Riverview (Kennewick). They were
evenly matched but Kyle pinned Nathanael at 4:12 ( :48 remaining
in the consolation bracket match). After Kyle's hand was
raised by the referee, Nathanael did a gracious and surprising
thing. He lifted his opponent up and carried him off the
mat. The ref, the coaches from both teams, and the fans in
the stands were shocked and happily surprised. So many
wrestlers had slapped the mat, stomped off with heads hung low,
or even cried. But Nathanael grinned and honored the
victor. We may never see such an act of sportsmanship
again.
So his career came to
the inevitable sudden end, as it also did for his teammates. None advanced to the
medal matches on Saturday, although Kevin Yoo won one match, his first, against his Lake Roosevelt opponent.
The statistics below
tell the tale of Nathanael's masterful wrestling career at BCS.
His four career records stand out as most indicative of the
talent of "my little guy." |

Most
career and season records only date from 2003-04 when
Coach Brandon Prior joined BCS. Jason Pheling is a
State Champion and wrestling legend at BCS. |
I was
especially proud of my COSTCO cake design. The
flags I made told of the 8 years that the BCS wrestlers
had been named Academic State Champions,
including all four of Nathanael's years on the team.
My 105
slide PowerPoint show entertained the wrestlers, coaches
and families at the February 26th banquet. It was
followed by a 15 minute video I put together, from
Nancy's recordings, of very brief highlights of each
wrestler.
I wonder
if I will have the desire to do this when Nate is at SPU. Will I take so much time following BCS
wrestlers around to matches? But watching the
large 7th and 8th grade class of wrestlers in practice
-- at least right now -- I'm inspired to continue on in
support of BCS wrestling next season. |
The D300 Takes Its Turn
Without a more firm tripod and perhaps a
remote shutter release, I'm not likely to
get great eclipse shots even with my new
Nikon D300 camera coupled with my big Nikkor
80-200 lens.
This eclipse was just short of total in the
Pacific Northwest on February 21st.
But since we had a very rare clear night, I
gave it my best shot to capture the event.
From Switzerland to the Rock Mountains, the
full eclipse could be seen that night. |

Running Icon
Doris Heritage Retires as Head Coach at SPU
Doris is a running and coaching legend and a lady I
greatly love and admire.
(From the
SPU Falcon) SEATTLE (Feb. 19) - Longtime
Seattle Pacific University cross-country coach
Doris Heritage, a pioneer of the sport and the face
of Falcons running for nearly 50 years, has announced
her retirement at the end of the current academic year.
Heritage
concluded her 30th season as head cross-country coach in
the fall, guiding the Falcon women to a second place
national finish at the NCAA Championships. This was the
highest NCAA placing in the program’s history, as SPU
sophomore Jessica Pixler won the individual title.
During Heritage’s tenure she also served as a coach for
the SPU Track & Field program. Her middle-distance and
distance runners have helped form the foundation of the
nationally prominent Falcon track team, which she serves
as assistant coach after having been head coach for six
seasons in the early 1980’s.
“The joy of running has meant so much to me over the
years, “said Heritage. “It has been a pleasure to get
to share this joy with the student-athletes at Seattle
Pacific and make a meaningful impact in their lives. It
truly has been a special experience.”
Without a doubt the world’s premier distance runner
during the ’60s, Heritage first honed her skills as a
member of the Falcon Track Club, the forerunner to
today’s women’s varsity. Under the direction of Coach
Ken Foreman, the then-Doris Brown set two American
records before graduating from SPU in 1964. Eventually
she owned every national and world record from 440 yards
up to the 3,000.
Heritage
was named to the U.S. Olympic team in 1968 and 1972,
taking fifth in the 800m at Mexico City. A last-minute
injury prevented her from running the 1500m in Munich.
She won the silver medal (800m) at Pan American Games in
1967 and 1971. From 1967-71, Heritage won an
unprecedented five consecutive world cross country
championships, and raced on nine U.S. world teams in
all. During her prime she won 14 national titles, and
set a world record in the 440, 800, mile and 3000m.
Still running in front of the pack, she won the U.S.
Masters cross-country title in 1989. |

Jeannie Beth Gets Her Braces Off
We already
knew she was cute, but look out now!
Just in
time for her High School acting debut, Jeannie has her
teeth back. She will be acting and singing in
Bye Bye Birdie at BCS this May. |
As you Like It
OK, I liked
it. But I was too tired to really get the most out
of it. I had a Diet Coke at intermission and that
helped. Taproot Theatre staged Shakespeare's As
You Like It in the 1960's and the Forest or Arden became
a sort of commune for the many pairs of questing lovers.
What
struck me most was how much of "the melancholy Jaques"
I see in myself. He was humorous, but when all the
lovers returned to their normal (now married) lives, he
stayed in the cave in the forest. Nathanael,
Jeannie, Nancy and I enjoyed this play when mom was
being cared for by the nurses at Swedish hospital on the
28th.
I thank it. More, I prithee,
more. I can suck
melancholy out of a song, as a
weasel sucks eggs.
More, I prithee, more. |
I
have neither the scholar's melancholy, which is
emulation, nor the musician's,
which is fantastical,
nor the courtier's, which is
proud, nor the
soldier's, which is ambitious,
nor the lawyer's,
which is politic, nor the
lady's, which is nice, nor
the lover's, which is all
these: but it is a
melancholy of mine own,
compounded of many simples,
extracted from many objects,
and indeed the sundry's
contemplation of my travels, in
which my often
rumination wraps me m a most
humorous sadness. |

My
February (and March, April, May...) Reading
My
current web design skills (of which this page is a good
example) are ancient by Internet standards. I've
put away my novels and am reading a bit of this book
each weekday and watching video training DVDs from
Total
Training Inc. Soon I hope to master at
least the foothills of this huge topic.
It may happen
that I will "inherit" a course of my own in the business
school. I have proposed that
BUS 4625
Organization's Presence on Net be revised to include
a major web design project. It would give me a chance to
focus on one area (an area of much greater interest to
me than Statistics) and give me a reason to retain my
"Instructor" title. Dr. Ken Knight (who hired me
in 1991) has taught this class and he retires this
spring. With real web design content the course
may grow from 10 students last quarter to who knows how
many.
The first
site I plan to update will be my business
SL8.com.
It's now embarrassing to have that site like it is and
still call myself a web designer. |

Annie
Turns 21
For Annie's 21st
birthday I got her a 2GB xD picture card for her Olympus camera,
a bag for her laptop and a power converter/adapter for her
summer trips to Europe. Nancy managed to deliver to SPU
all this birthday loot pictured.
Bits and Pieces
- Dad and Randy
dropped their computers off at my house to be healed.
- One Saturday,
Randy took me shopping to get him a laptop and printer and
related items. We had a fun day of tech shopping at COSTCO
and Office Depot. Then I spent the evening setting it all
up for him.
My January Quote
. . . the divine accolade,
"Well done, thou good and faithful
servant."
"In some sense, as dark to the
intellect as it is unendurable to
the feelings, we can be both
banished from the presence of Him
who is present everywhere and erased
from the knowledge of Him who knows
all. We can be left utterly
and absolutely outside―
repelled, exiled, estranged, finally
and unspeakably ignored. On the
other hand, we can be called in,
welcomed, received, acknowledged.
We walk everyday on the razor edge
between these two incredible
possibilities."
